The Olympian (Wash.) recently reported that after an hour-long presentation by court reporters in Thurston County Superior Court to the Thurston County Commission explaining what their jobs are, Commissioner Sandra Romero said that while the governing body is always looking for ways to cut expenses, it is not considering requesting budget cuts that would result in layoffs to court reporters. The article quotes NCRA member Kathryn A. Beehler, RPR, CRR, CCP, one of six official court reporters for the Thurston County Courthouse, comparing a court reporter’s skills on a steno keyboard to that of a concert pianist.
“We are entrusted as guardians of the record, and we record the proceedings in our courts, the House, the Senate, and Supreme Court. Court reporters record history,” she said.
