The Sioux City News in Iowa ran an article May 26 about the efforts of local court reporters there working to recruit the next generation of reporters to help fill a current shortage caused by the state’s Supreme Court switching to digital audio reporting. The switch also led to the closure of a longtime court reporting program at AIB College of Business in Des Moines. Recently, however, the Des Moines Area Community College announced that it plans to start offering court reporting classes this coming fall. This is especially good news in light of the court’s change of heart to switch back to live court reporters and the fact that an estimated 60 percent of current reporters are expected to retire over the next 10 years.
