Bruhat Soma of Florida won the 95th Scripps National Spelling Bee in the second-ever spell-off. A spell-off occurs when the championship has exceeded the allotted time and there is no champion. Soma spelled 29 words correctly in the spell-off with “abseil,” a word meaning “to descend a steep slope,” considered the championship word.
