AI is not ready for prime time

An article published July 29 on IndieWire discussed the advantages of human captioners over automated speech recognition for television programming. Author Mark Blankenship interviewed VITAC executives, a Scripps National Spelling Bee captioner, the CEO of the National Association of the Deaf, and others, pointing out sound effects, important pauses, complicated spelling, and background music as important elements that human captioners bring to the viewing experience.
