Honoring a legacy of service: The Foundation’s Carl Sauceda Grant opens

NCRF’s Carl Sauceda Grant opened this week in celebration of and along with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The $2,000 grant recognizes a deserving NCRA member who has uplifted others and has influenced rising court reporters or captioners in their careers. The deadline to apply is March 28.

The grant pays tribute to Carl Sauceda, FAPR, RMR (Ret.), of Hayward, Calif., who served as NCRA President from 1999 to 2000. Sauceda’s commitment to fostering professional growth and giving back to the community remains an enduring inspiration.

The 2024 Carl Sauceda Grant was awarded to Denee’ Vadell, RPR, an official court reporter from Edison, N.Y. Vadell founded the social media group StenoFluencers and is known for promoting the stenographic court reporting and captioning professions.

“Denee’s work at promoting the profession is not just a response to the immediate needs of our profession, but a forward-looking plan designed to secure its future. By focusing on the integration of technology and the development of new talent, Denee’ is ensuring that the court reporting and captioning professions evolve to meet the changing landscape of the legal and CART communities,” wrote Angela Grant, RDR, CRR, an official court reporter and freelancer from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., who nominated Vadell.

The grant is awarded annually by NCRF Trustees in recognition of the recipient’s work to support others, the influence the member has had in the profession, and their continuous commitment to supporting stenographic court reporting and captioning.

Sauceda shared his thoughts on being honored with a grant in his name in the February 2022 issue of the Journal of Court Reporting.
