NCRA’s 13th Court Reporting & Captioning Week kicked off with a flash, actually, a lot of flashes, when early arrivals for the Association’s Leadership & Legislative Boot Camp joined forces to strike some poses for a special marketing photo shoot held by the Communications Team. In addition to strutting their stuff with sparkles, balloons, boas, and more, participants also had fun passing around and posing with a special commemorative frame to help kick off the weeklong celebration of the court reporting and captioning professions.
Watch for these photos in the coming months as they will be used in an array of NCRA marketing materials. And thank you to everyone who participated. Staff is certain a good time was had by all!
The proclamations keep coming
Alexandria, Va., Mayor Alyia Gaskins welcomed attendees at the 2025 Leadership & Legislative Boot Camp taking place Feb. 1-3 in her city with a special proclamation recognizing Court Reporting & Captioning Week. In addition, the Wisconsin Court Reporters Association announced that Gov. Tony Evers has issued an official proclamation recognizing the week, while Gov. Jared Polis of Colorado and Gov. Tate Reeves of Mississippi have issued official proclamations in thier states.
Reminder to all state affiliates to send a copy of their official proclamations recognizing the week to pr@ncra.org to be entered into a drawing for a free 2025 NCRA Conference & Expo registration. The winning state will be announced in the Feb. 12 JCR Weekly.
Show me those steno fingers
In honor of Court Reporting & Captioning Week, NCRA Director Margary Rogers, RPR, CRI, an official court reporter from Washington, D.C., treated herself to a special manicure to celebrate steno before heading off to join her peers at Boot Camp.
In other states…
Activities hosted by the California Court Reporters Association included an in-person all-day Boot Camp held at the Cadet Academy at Downey Adult School, including an end-of-the-day wrap up with Boot Camp Bingo and evening events throughout the week that include crocheting, crafting, Mandala Art making, baking, and diamond painting.
In Colorado, members of the Colorado Court Reporters Association from the 4th Judicial District Court are hosting an “unofficial” happy hour to celebrate. The Association is also encouraging members to post quick videos and other messages on social media about how much they love their jobs and reminding them to renew their membership or join by Feb. 7 to a chance to win a $150 Visa gift card.
The Florida Court Reporters Association hosted several activities to mark the week including a BYOB – Bring Your Own Briefs – event via Zoom. Attendees were encouraged to bring the best steno briefs to share with others and to network.
And in Canada…
In honor of Court Reporting & Captioning Week, the Senate of Canada announced that it has launched an on-demand CART app, designed to enhance its accessibility. According to a press release issued by the Senate, the new system brings the work of Senate stenographers — called parliamentary reporters — directly to anyone following Senate proceedings, improving communication and accessibility for all.
While CART had been previously available at the Senate, it could only be accessed onsite via a Senate laptop. The new system gives people the option to see captions on their own devices (e.g., phone, laptop, or tablet) from anywhere they have internet access. Anyone who needs – or wants – to use CART can watch a text version of what is said during committee meetings and Senate sittings almost as fast as the reporters can write it. To see how the news system works, visit the Senate Chamber’s Communications Access Realtime Translation page. To follow a committee meeting, select the “Live captioning (CART)” link on the Schedule of all Meetings page. The next opportunity to see the system, and the parliamentary reporters, in action is scheduled for March 24.
Get in on the fun!
