Miracom, producer of the InnoCaption mobile communications app for the deaf and hard of hearing, is seeking approval from the Federal Trade Commission (FCC) to gain access to a government fund that would allow customers to use the app for free. However, the FCC is refusing to grant any new companies access to the fund, as they are concerned that it has become subject to fraud. This app allows users to have phone conversations with the aid of a stenographer who transcribes the exchange. Both Miracom and advocates of the deaf and hard of hearing communities fear that the FCC’s delays will negatively affect the progress of this project and may force the assistive app to be pulled off the market.
