In honor of 2021 Court Reporting & Captioning Week being observed Feb. 6-13, NCRA’s Captioning Committee will host “Captioning Matchmaking: You’ve got a question? We’ve got the answers!” It will be a Zoom meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern for members only. Registration for the event closes at 3 p.m. Eastern on Feb. 9.
Panelists for the event include: NCRA Director Heidi Thomas, FAPR, RDR, CRR, CRC, a captioner from Kennesaw, Ga.; Lindsay Stoker, RPR, CRC, a captioner from Fullerton, Calif.; Debra Bollman, RMR, CRR, CRC, a captioner from Los Angeles, Calif.; and Carol Studenmund, FAPR, RDR, CRR, CRC, a captioner from Portland, Ore. The panelists bring a variety of experiences and backgrounds to share, including their experiences with CAT software such as CASE CATalyst and Eclipse. They will also share their experiences captioning to a variety of platforms, historical captioning information, what companies are looking for when hiring a captioner, and the best ways to prep for sporting events.
“One of the best parts of working onsite with a team of captioners is the camaraderie, talking about how we write certain phrases, use our software in multiple ways, and organize our schedules,” said Kelly D. Linkowski, RPR, CRR, CRC, a captioner from Rittman, Ohio, and chair of NCRA’s Captioning Committee. “The way we produce captions and the multiple platforms are evolving quickly. The Captioning Committee wanted to offer an online space to share information and for members to ask questions,” she said.
“Whenever I go to an NCRA conference or state association events, I always go seeking a solution so I can provide quality captions leaving consumers with a positive experience. We all have issues that come up in our daily captioning lives that we could do better managing or be able to approach the situation differently. This is the space to come ask those questions. The CRR is the minimum standard for beginning captioners, and we all need to continue to evolve as professionals, adding knowledge to our toolbox. Whether you have a pressing question on a platform for an assignment next week, or you just want to be able to confidently write into a new platform, this is the matchmaking opportunity for you,” Linkowski added.
