The West Virginia legislature recently passed Code 47-27, which sets new standards for court reporters in West Virginia. The legislation went into effect June 6, 2014.
The new legislation sets minimum transcript format guidelines, limits the copy charge to 55% of the original transcript cost, and prevents the bundling of transcript services, among other points. The new code section does not apply to official reporters when acting in their official capacity.
Traveling to border states is a common practice for many court reporters. While the West Virginia Code would not apply to West Virginia court reporters traveling to another state to take a deposition that is not part of a West Virginia case, cases under the jurisdiction of West Virginia law would be covered under the new code.
