Peter Jepsen, a giant in the closed captioning industry, passed away on December 27, 2015, in Fairmont, Minn.
Jepsen began his career as a court reporter and took on many different roles through the years. He worked for XScribe in the 1980s and helped many captioners and companies upgrade to the latest technology available to deliver live broadcast captioning. Later in his career, he also worked for Advantage Software.
Jepsen’s career took him to many foreign countries. A highlight included meeting the Dalai Lama. He was instrumental in bringing live captioning to Canada and trained many court reporters to become broadcast captioners. Jepsen also spent 12 years at the United States Senate, most of that time as the Director of Closed Captioning Services. Following his time at the Senate, Jepsen was an instructor at the AIB College of Business in Des Moines, Iowa.
In recent years, Jepsen was retired, but as during his career, he always enjoyed sharing his technical knowledge and mentoring up-and-coming captioners.
